Gummy Worms and brownies, oh my! What could be better when it comes to a fun and creative dirt dessert that will impress everyone?  I love chocolate and gummy candies together, so win-win!

We made brownie cookies, frosted them with a sinful fudge brownie frosting, sprinkled them with crushed oreos to look like dirt, then added some gummy worm embellishments!  Even some eyeballs, but I don’t want to go there, who’s eyeballs those are…anywhoo!

For this brownie cookie recipe, I love the convenience of using a brownie mix.  It’s easy to make and requires minimal ingredients, so you can whip them up in just a few simple steps.  But if you love homemade all the way, these Best Fudgy Brownie Cookies will do the trick!

What Gummy Worms Should I Use?

There are a ton of gummi or gummy worms out there to buy at your local grocer or online. for this recipe, I used Nimiano Brand Gummi Candy off of Amazon.

I got 3 different flavor packets of 12 soft and chewy assorted gummy flavors of Fruity, Aqua Sour and Neon Gummi Worms.  They are super yummy too alone or on these cookies!

You could also use any kind of gummies you want, besides the worms.  There are gummy skulls, eyeballs, brains, spiders, and more!  You see where I’m going?  The list goes on and you can get as creative as you want!

Recipe for Dirt Brownie Mix Cookies

Brownie Frosting

Bake the Brownie Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Make sure you measure flour correctly. In large bowl, using a mixer, mix the brownie mix, flour, oil, and eggs until combined well, without over-mixing. Mixture will be really thick and should come together in a ball when you scoop it up or place it in your hands to make a ball. 
  3. Using large cookie scoop, fill scoop and place 6 scoops of dough on each baking sheet.
  4. These large cookies will bake 12-15 minutes, you just want to make sure the cookies on top aren’t still wet.  You can touch them, and if they are too gooey, put them back in the oven for a couple more minutes. Adjust baking time for smaller cookies, if you wish to make smaller.  We love the jumbo cookies!
  5. Let cookies cool 5 minutes, then remove them with spatula to wire racks to finish cooling.

Storing Cookies

  1. Store dirt brownie cookies in airtight container up to up to 4-5 days or until ready to frost.  Once frosted, take care to make not to stack these cookies on top of each other if the frosting is wet, even with the cookie crumbs on top.

Make the Chocolate Brownie Frosting

  1. Using a mixer, beat together the softened butter, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth. Add in powdered sugar and milk and turn mixer on low increasing up to medium speed until frosting is well combined and creamy for a minute or two. 
  2. Add more milk if too frosting is too thick and more powdered sugar if too frosting is too thin.  
  3. Spread frosting on cookies with offset spatula or place frosting in a pastry bag and pipe the frosting on the tops of the cookies.

To Assemble Cookies

  1. Sprinkle crushed Oreos on top of cookies as you frost each cookie, so the top layer of frosting doesn’t dry out and the Oreos adhere to the frosting. 
  2. Add gummy worms, eyeballs, candies or whatever you want to make them fun for your Halloween cookies showdown!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 18.3 oz. box Betty Crocker Fudge Brownie Mix
  • cup all purpose flour measured correctly
  • cup canola oil or oil of choice
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup milk chocolate chips

Brownie Frosting

  • ½ cup unsalted butter room temperature or microwaved for 10-20 seconds to soften
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk of choice

Toppings

  • 6 whole Oreo Cookies crushed (add more if you want)
  • Gummy worms I used Nimiano Brand Gummi Candy | Soft and Chewy Assorted Flavor Delicious Gummies | 12 Flavor, Aqua Sour and Neon
  • Optional Candy Eyeballs

Instructions
