In a saucepan over medium heat, stir together peanut butter, butter, and brown sugar until melted and bubbling. Remove from heat.
Gradually mix in powdered sugar until fully combined.
Shape the mixture into footballs using a scoop or cookie cutter. Place on the baking sheet and refrigerate for 30 minutes (or freeze for 5–10 minutes).
Melt chocolate chips with shortening in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth.
Dip footballs in chocolate, let excess drip off, and place on wax paper.
Pipe frosting to resemble football laces, then refrigerate for 30 minutes to set.
Store in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to serve.

I noticed when I use Jif I need more powdered sugar (2 cups) with Skippy I used 1 3/4 cup powdered sugar.
